Ukraine is now all but an abandoned wasteland, but we still have whole countries seemingly queuing up to replace and/or join that abject misery. More remotely we now have Argentina - a new entrant - and Finland - even more recent. Then, of course, there's Armenia as we have seen before trying its moronic best to cater to Western demands while pretending its way through the whole embarrassing Nagorno-Karabakh single day defeat and then handover of its operations to France and American NGOs. Georgia and Kazakhstan half heartedly host anti Russian elements so they can appear closer to the coup rearview mirror than they truly are. And Poland seems to be preparing to absorb what's left.
But ringed around Ukraine to the west and south are a string of swine looking for Western/NATO pearls. None quite so much as Moldova, though. I wasn't watching this movie back before 2020 and not so widely even then. But I believe that today we are looking back at a Moldova that was a coup by election victim in November 2020, just like the US. And they made the runoff look like a landslide that the first round didn't indicate in any way. As Maia Sandu garnered nearly 70% of the dropped candidates’ votes. And her opponent tossed promises to dispute the election. (Where have we seen that scene before?) Of course all of that was drowned completely in other news.
It may have actually started just over a year before then, as recited by now Deputy Prime Minister Dumitru Alaiba in this blog post - About Moldova’s Silent Revolution. (Then he was a Member of Parliament of three months standing. Seems his star was already hitched to hers.) That one was an attempted coup by the then de facto but former Prime Minister according to Dumitru as the party run by oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc was unable to form a government as time was running out and simultaneously being chopped short. As the Court shaved two full days off of the time allotted to forming a government (by redefining three months to mean 90 days) accompanied by a bomb scare (fake of unknown origin), a bare minimum quorum group of legislators and other politically identified parties and diplomats took over the Parliament Building and without lights or communications, began a week long process of hammering one into existence. By the end the lights and some communications were operable but a government of somewhat dubious legality emerged. The most “reform-oriented” candidate Maia emerged as Prime Minister. (Reminds me of our 1991 Soviet debacle minus the shootings at the end. The post is both diary and pre/post context - worth your time. Link to copy is also below.)
There's a totally credible argument we have a Joe Biden clone in Maia Sandu. And highly likely that she was very deliberately placed there to burn it all down, especially as a fire break NATO fall back position if the Ukraine war wasn't the raging success they expected. But best laid plans notwithstanding, her residence in Chisinau may be entering a final phase. (Wondering what EU position she has lined up?)
Recent local elections have her party only collecting one third of the seats available. Even former friendly press has noticed all the freedom killing “democracy supporting” measures (like disqualification of popular candidates) and extreme media censorship. Her latest move is to reduce funds available to all cities and regions that “broke free” of the desired official party selection requirements.
So while in the past week Finland starts cozying up to Poland for militarizing their rapidly closing borders with Russia (reports today indicate now total closure), Moldovan and Polish farmers are closing trade routes from Ukraine at their borders. Some Moldovan ministers claim it is impossible to break agricultural contracts with Russia at this time as the EU is pushing hard for it to happen. Meanwhile, Maia and others are actively doing the whole farming asset transfer to Blackrock thing. Our new (and already Politico #1 influential) European politician, former EC President Donald Franciszek Tusk, is set to lead Poland and has started out by demanding Ukraine return Lviv. (<=I would call all of these events definitive geopolitical distemper inducements.)
But Moldova (well, actually Maia) has tethered herself to the Ukraine outcome now. The recent 10th anniversary celebration of the inception of the EuroMaidan (now mistakenly styled as the “Revolution of Dignity and Freedom”) was very sparsely attended. Besides Maia and Zelenskyy, there was EC President Charles Michel. And US and German defense ministers. (<= Those two were there for the obvious reasons but potentially others as well.) Maia seems to have made the trip primarily to discuss Moldovan prospects of EU membership status. Which apparently she sees as a package deal involving Ukraine. (We call that whistling Dixie in the Deep South.) Charles did follow her home for some reason other than the blah blah bilateral BS. It may have something to do with David Cameron setting up UK shop there first by traipsing over after his inaugural visit to Ukraine two weeks ago.
Sadly, the EU is insisting upon 110% adherence to Russian sanctions requirements (as stated above to be “impossible”), and that won't happen for Ukraine because it is a complete wreck that doesn't qualify as a country anymore. So surely there was another reason.
A recent Rybar post states that while President Maia Sandu of Moldova visited Kyiv to discuss issues of joint European integration with Ukraine, according to other sources, Western influencers discussed a potential military scenario in Transnistria with her. Despite its constitutional neutrality, Moldova officially joined the Meeting of South-Eastern European Defense Ministers (SEDM) at the Ankara summit, which operates under the patronage of NATO.
And then this subsequent one:
🔸🇲🇩🇺🇦🇬🇧 After President Maia Sandu's visit to Kyiv, troubling rumors have started spreading in the Moldovan media.
🔻The first rumor suggests that Sandu intends to involve Azov militants in forcefully suppressing the opposition in Chisinau. However, considering the significant losses suffered by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) and the ongoing mobilization in Ukraine, it seems unlikely that Kyiv is willing to deploy selected troops for the political needs of a neighboring country.
Furthermore, in Moldova, there is currently no coordinated opposition ready to challenge the authorities. The country is under external control, referred to as the “EU civilian mission” with European officials present in all government bodies, including the security sector.
In June, the Austrian government dispatched around 40 police and military personnel to Chisinau to “protect” the country from destabilization attempts.
Nevertheless, Moldova is set to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in 2024, and the recent local elections have clearly weakened Sandu’s position. Therefore, it is expected that there will be a stricter policy towards dissidents.
🔻The second rumor involves a potential military operation in Transnistria, possibly coordinated by the new British Foreign Minister, David Cameron, during his recent visits to Kyiv, Odessa, and Chisinau.
The threat of forcibly reintegrating Transnistria has been a topic of discussion for some time now. Ukrainian Armed Forces units have already concentrated on the borders, conducting reconnaissance in the region. Additionally, President Zelensky has made threats against the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the unrecognized republic.
📌The major failures of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the frontlines, along with the continuous influx of weapons into Moldova and ongoing military exercises in the country, could escalate the situation in Transnistria. It appears that Western influencers are actively preparing Moldova for such a scenario.

It may be the heat cranking up by a populace fed up with her, and her sycophants and partners. That remains to be seen, but surely shutting down access to non budgetary federal funds to 2/3 of the local governments won’t be a big win for her popularity. Then there’s this to consider. Following all that UK/EU posturing Deputy PM Nikolai Popescu goes to the OSCE meeting in Skopje (yes, the same one the Baltic weasels backed out of because of scary old Lavrov in attendance) full of fire and brimstone over Maia's unilateral determination that Russian peacekeepers are in Transnistria “illegally”. (Armenia redux, anyone? 🙄)
They just think we aren’t watching. Because of their other circuses. It’s getting to be that time. WWIII is already not optional, but the timing appears to still be fluid. On our clock is the mental preparation for the final chapters. It’s ticking way more loudly than ever.
And this little detail is some kind of message, albeit an uncertain one.
🔸Moldova is no longer in the new American geography textbook. There is a big Romania.
Well, this is so that you don’t have to redo the textbook twice later. Moldova has long ago lost its sovereignty.
And, frankly speaking, why even depict this country in an American textbook if the majority of Americans, especially teenagers, cannot even show Ukraine on a map? This is not a joke, if anything.
And they made a mistake with Crimea too.
😡 Evil Journalist 🔸
That’s all for now. Until the next war front opens up. Pa pentru moment!

Thanks for this. It’s very interesting to me to get a more in depth view of the inside political climate in these regions. They never seem important until problems arise that impact a larger area. As you say who could have found Ukraine on a map a couple years ago? Although to be completely honest how many can find it now. I appreciate your research and detailed essays greatly.
